TikTok is shutting down Notes, a photo-sharing app that competed with Instagram. In a message to users, the TikTok Notes team said that the application will cease to operate on May 8, and “all related functions will no longer be available.”
TikTok first launched the Notes app in April last year, which allows users to share photos along with a caption, as well as scroll through a “For You” feed with recommended content. The app was initially launched in limited testing in Australia and Canada.

The decision to close the app “was not taken lightly,” TikTok said in a statement. It also invites users to try Lemon8, another social platform owned by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance.
Lemon8 allows users to share both photos and videos and focuses on lifestyle topics such as beauty, food, fashion, travel, and pets. Although TikTok began pushing users to the app in the days leading up to its brief closure in the US, Lemon8 was also taken offline due to the ban.
“We’re excited to move reviews from TikTok Notes to Lemon8 as we continue to build a dedicated space for our community to share photo content designed to complement and enhance the TikTok experience,” a TikTok spokesperson told TechCrunch.
