Threads is adding a new feature that allows users to be more creative in remixing other people’s posts. The app has introduced a “markup” tool that allows users to write on top of posts they want to share, Adam Mosseri said in a post.
The markup feature appears in the quote and repost menu. But instead of just quoting a post, it launches an editing tool where you can add highlights, arrows, or doodles on top of a screenshot of the post. According to Mosseri, this feature is meant to “let you add your own creative touch” to posts, but for now, the tools are pretty limited. You can only add yellow highlights or red arrows and scribbles, although Mosseri said that “more features are coming soon” from Meta.
A Threads spokesperson confirmed that this feature will work similarly to the post quote feature, meaning that the user who created the post will be notified if someone decides to tag their post. You can also use the “who can reply and quote” settings to disable tagging for your own posts.
There are also two other features coming to the app that can already be previewed: post scheduling and analytics. These features are likely to be especially useful for brands, authors, and others who manage a professional presence on the site, which has so far lacked many of the more advanced business-oriented tools found on other Meta platforms. Both features could also come in handy if Meta starts serving ads on Threads, which is reportedly planned for early 2025.
