Steam game recorder is now available to everyone

Steam’s game recording feature has left the beta version and is now available to all Mac, PC, and Steam Deck users, Valve has announced. It provides a proprietary tool for recording game sessions and also offers basic tools for editing clips. Users can run it in the background or manually start or stop the recording. In addition, there is a replay option that allows you to quickly review recent recordings. You can add markers for key moments, and if the game supports Game Recording’s Timeline feature, Steam will add its own markers.

The new feature eliminates the need to use third-party recorders or apps from NVIDIA and AMD. Since the tool’s first presentation in June 2024, several games have provided official support for timelines and event markers, including Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2. Third-party developers can also implement this feature using the Valve SDK.

Valve claims that this feature minimizes the use of your resources if your system does not have a GPU.

Clips can be exported as MP4s, sent to other devices, transferred to mobile devices via QR code, or shared via a temporary link that can be viewed by anyone on Steam. To use the new feature, you’ll need to update your Steam account. Then go to the “Game Recording” section in the settings and enable this feature. Please note that it is available in Windows 10/11 and MacOS 10.13 or 10.14.
