Spotify is looking to compete with YouTube with its new affiliate program for creators of videos and content that goes viral. The music and podcasting app has announced a new “Partner Program” that monetizes audio and video, in addition to advertising revenue, starting January 2, 2025.
The new monetization program pays Spotify creators in two ways. Creators can earn a share of revenue from advertising their content across all platforms through an affiliate program. They can also earn money through monthly podcast subscriptions, which “allow listeners to directly support creators in exchange for exclusive bonus content and privileges.”
Both levels also have certain requirements for participants. The Spotify Partner Program requires participants to host and upload their content through the Spotify for Creators platform, stream 10,000 hours and at least 2,000 unique views within a 30-day period, and publish at least 12 episodes. Subscriptions will be open to content creators with at least two published episodes and at least 100 unique Spotify listeners within a 60-day period. The new programs will be available to subscribers in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia next January.
Spotify has taken other steps to make its video and music content more accessible and widespread. The music and video streaming service has integrated with TikTok and Instagram to allow users to publish tracks on these social networks.
