Spotify Cracks Down on Family Plan Sharing

Streaming giant Spotify is tightening its grip on family plan sharing, implementing new measures to ensure subscribers actually reside at the same address. Reports indicate that some users have already begun experiencing issues with their shared accounts as the company ramps up its verification efforts.

Stricter Verification Measures

According to tech media outlet Android Authority, Spotify is now prompting some family plan users to re-verify their home address. This new verification process appears to require a face-to-face confirmation between the account administrator and the family members.

The process involves family members scanning a QR code displayed on the administrator’s phone. This QR code is dynamic, refreshing every few seconds, making it impossible to share via screenshots. The intention is to confirm that all users are indeed living at the same location, a core requirement of the Spotify Premium Family plan.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

Spotify is granting users a 7-day window to complete this re-verification process once notified. Failure to comply or to complete the verification within the given timeframe will result in the family subscription being automatically downgraded to the free tier. Furthermore, users who fail verification will be prohibited from joining any new family or duo plans for a period of 12 months. However, individual subscription plans will remain unaffected, allowing users to continue their Spotify experience on a personal basis.

A Look Back at Past Attempts

This is not the first time Spotify has attempted to curb password and account sharing. Back in 2018, the company piloted a GPS-based verification system. This method involved periodically checking the location of users to ensure they were within the same geographical area. However, the move faced significant backlash from users, leading Spotify to eventually relax these restrictions.

The current QR code scanning method appears to be a more direct, albeit potentially inconvenient, approach to enforcing the terms of service for its family plans. While some users have reportedly found workarounds, such as using screen sharing to bypass the live scanning requirement, it remains to be seen how effective Spotify’s latest strategy will be in the long run.

The crackdown highlights a broader trend among subscription services to more strictly enforce sharing policies, as companies look to maximize revenue and ensure fair usage of their tiered plans.
