Sorry to anyone who was expecting Sonos to release a streaming device — it doesn’t look like it’s happening anytime soon. The company has reportedly canceled the release of a long-awaited product that was reportedly well into development.
Sonos executives announced the cancellation at a shareholders meeting on Wednesday, The Verge reports. Interim CEO Tom Conrad said the company won’t be entering the streaming market “for now.” The team that worked on the project, codenamed Pinewood, will be reassigned to other projects.
Last month, it was reported that Sonos could start selling the device this year for between $200 and $400. Pinewood is rumored to feature unified software with universal search for shows and movies from various streaming services like Netflix, Max, and Disney+. Pinewood was supposed to integrate with Sonos’ voice control and act as an HDMI hub for home entertainment devices like game consoles. And of course, the set-top box would sync with Sonos soundbars and speakers.
According to the report, Pinewood’s cancellation leaves Sonos without a major new product that was supposed to launch in the second half of 2025. Instead, it looks like the company will double down on its efforts to rebuild its reputation and software performance after the disastrous launch of its new mobile app in 2024.
The fiasco led to the firing of former CEO Patrick Spence and other executives. Sonos also laid off hundreds of employees as part of a restructuring plan.
