ChatGPT, a popular artificial intelligence chatbot from OpenAI, suffered its second major outage on December 27. According to DownDetector, a website that monitors online service outages, users started reporting problems around 13:30 EST.
During the outage, ChatGPT suddenly shut down and stopped responding to user requests. Most of those affected appear to be in the United States. The cause of this outage remains unclear.
ChatGPT faces a serious outage
Many US users reportedly complained that the site was not working for them in the morning, although reports started coming in after half an hour or so. During this time, 2,483 reports of outages were received, according to Downdetector.
This is not the first time the chatbot has experienced outages. The last outage occurred on December 11, when the chatbot faced a similar problem. The last outage also affected all three platforms. It concerned ChatGPT, Sora, and the API. It was the same day Apple released iOS 18.2 with ChatGPT integration into Siri. Due to a glitch, some users were unable to use the OpenAI chatbot via Siri at the time.
There is still a lot of work to be done
Well, the artificial intelligence model has been suffering from similar failures for quite some time. Last month, on November 8, ChatGPT was unavailable to more than 19,000 users worldwide for 30 minutes.
In response to the outage, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted that ChatGPT was only down for 30 minutes. To emphasize his statement, he also added a frowning emoji and said: “We are much, much better in terms of reliability than we used to be, but obviously we still have a lot of work to do.” He also added that since its debut in November 2022, ChatGPT has gained about 250 million weekly active users. By this time, OpenAI’s valuation had reached a maximum of $157 billion. In 2021, it was about $14 billion.
