Samsung will finally support Qi2 wireless charging in 2025

Samsung Galaxy phones will finally get Qi2 support in 2025, according to the standard’s leaders, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). Qi2 wireless charging was supposed to bring the convenience of MagSafe in the iPhone to any phone that supports it, but the vast majority of Android phone manufacturers failed to do anything with it in 2024. That should change in 2025.

“Qi2’s exceptional growth story will continue in 2025,” Samsung said in a press release issued at WPC. “You can expect to see Qi2-enabled Android devices from Samsung Galaxy in 2025.” In addition to requiring the inclusion of magnets to make it easier to align smartphones with wireless chargers, Qi2 also supports charging up to 15W, which means that Qi2 devices should also charge faster than before.

Along with Samsung, Google is also throwing its hat into the ring for Qi2, specifically by providing “its own high-power wireless charging technology for WPC” to develop Qi v2.2. However, Google’s statement is missing a promise to use this standard in its Pixel devices. The Pixel 9 was undoubtedly the best Android device the company has released to date, but it does not support Qi2.

In the near future, according to WPC, Qi v2.1 will include a new design for wireless car chargers with a moving charging coil that can adjust and seek out a phone no matter its size or how awkwardly it is placed on the charger.
