In an effort to expand its user base in India, Reddit has updated its machine translation feature to support automatic translation of Hindi posts and comments.
“With this expansion, authentic, more people-centered content is now available in one of India’s most widely spoken languages,” the company wrote in an updated blog post. Reddit said it will soon add support for Bengali as well.
Reddit began testing machine translation across the site last May, starting with French. In September, the company launched the feature in more than 35 countries and added support for Spanish and Portuguese.
Earlier this month, the company launched AI-powered Answers for users in India, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Previously, this feature was only available to a limited number of English-speaking users in the United States.
India remains a big focus for the social platform. The company has hired several people in India for positions related to community building, development, legal, and engineering, and is actively hiring for content and community-related positions.
