Last year, OPPO made a lot of really interesting announcements, including the release of the OPPO Reno12 FS 5G. Due to various circumstances, I didn’t have time to release a review earlier, so I’m fixing the situation now. In this review, we will discuss the features of the new product, its advantages, and chances to be noticed against a large number of competitors.

Packaging and shipping kit

First of all, the box that the OPPO Reno12 FS 5G comes in is made in exactly the same style as the packaging of the previously reviewed OPPO A3x, as well as the A58, A18 and many others. You can read my impressions of the design by clicking on one of the last two links. So we have another example of a unified look with some of the data we already know. The second part is specific to the model – technical specifications, etc. Details are shown in the photo below.

Inside the box is a pretty good, let’s say, “arsenal”. In addition to the smartphone itself, the user will find a charger adapter, a USB/USB Type-C cable, a branded pouch, a SIM card/memory card access clip, and the necessary documentation. The protective film on the display is already applied out of the box.

OPPO Reno12 FS 5G: Design, materials and workmanship

The design of OPPO Reno12 FS 5G resembles the design of the OPPO Reno12 F smartphone. This model is also available in olive green, which we have already reviewed, as well as amber-orange. In the latter case, I reviewed the 12F model. What can I say in conclusion? It’s the amber shade that makes a real wow effect. This is exactly what no one else has. Indeed, it is a “premium on the minimum”.

The olive green version is more restrained, although it will also get its share of applause for the format chosen by the manufacturer. Your image is a business suit, frequent negotiations, thin productive laptops without which meetings are simply impossible. Then 9 times out of 10 you will choose the second combination of shades. But subjectively, and I wrote about this in the Reno 12F review, the amber version is more interesting, and accordingly, I want to own this particular terminal.

Like the OPPO A3x, Reno 12F and many other models, the 12 FS 5G’s body is based on a multi-layer plastic that has undergone special processing. The bezel is also made of plastic and the screen is covered with glass. We’ll see what kind of glass it is in the appropriate section later.

By the way, the camera unit is behind a glass flap as well; the frame is plastic, although it has a nice metal look.

The undoubted advantage of the case is the protection according to three standards at the same time – IP64 – against water and dust; protection of internal components by Sponge Bionic Cushioning – a special structure with a bionic cushioning coating + SGS Performance Multi-Scene Protection Testing (SGS tests for protection efficiency in various situations). As a result, you don’t need to expect any remarks, comments or suggestions for improvement at the assembly level from me; in the absence of a better comparison, we have the results of the surgical approach. In short, even the most outspoken skeptics will be satisfied in this regard.

The phone is comfortable to hold. The user does not feel the weight of 187 grams, even during prolonged continuous use; the smartphone itself feels comfortable and secure, even without a case. Of course, you won’t be able to control it completely with the fingers of the hand you’re holding it in, for obvious reasons, but the lion’s share of the functionality will be within reach, and it will be comfortable to control. I personally had enough time to make sure of the latter.

OPPO Reno12 FS 5G Ergonomics – Key Points

92.2% of the front part is dedicated to the display, in the lower part of which the user will easily notice three classic touch buttons that the manufacturer has placed on the functional part.

The upper part of the same panel is also notable for the front camera + earpiece speaker. Behind it, you simply can’t help but notice a huge camera unit with a bezel and a flash. There is also the manufacturer’s logo and some technical data strips.

front camera + earpiece speaker

The right side panel features two volume buttons and a separate power button.

The left edge has no buttons or connectors.

At the top we have the noise canceller output, and at the bottom there is a “seat” for a SIM card/memory card container, a speaker + type-C port, and a built-in microphone.

OPPO Reno12 FS 5G Display

The OPPO Reno12 FS 5G has a large 6.67 inch screen with a resolution of FHD+ or 1080×2400 pixels. The refresh rate is 60Hz or 120Hz. The default refresh rate is 120 Hz, the maximum is 240 Hz.

As for the color gamut, we have the following indicators: bright mode – 100% DCI-P3 coverage, natural mode – 100% sRGB coverage.

The color depth is 16.7 million. The pixel density is much higher than the standard 300 ppi, namely 394 ppi. Therefore, there is no graininess.

Typical brightness is 600 nits, with a maximum of 1200 nits in direct sunlight. The protective glass on board is AGC DT-Star2.

Display customization and experience

Now for the display settings. In the corresponding menu item we have the following “things”: the ability to select dark or light modes, automatic or manual brightness adjustment, color mode selection, work with the necessary tools for eye comfort, font settings, display size, etc. See the photo below for graphical details.

As for the experience of working with the screen, there are no complaints in this regard. As a result, we have a 10-finger multitouch that responds to pressure, even to cursory pressure, a wide viewing angle without maximum distortion, and good physical protection. There are also no problems with data display when the screen is exposed to bright sunlight, and I had more than enough time to make sure of that.

Built-in memory

The model is available in two versions with 256 GB and 512 GB of internal storage. The older of the above-mentioned modifications was in our office.

Formats for expanding the built-in memory

The user can expand the “standard” capacity either by adding memory cards or by connecting a USB drive. Personally, we tested a 512 GB card (the maximum we have in our newsroom at the moment) and were satisfied with the results – absolutely correct “cooperation” between the media and the smartphone system.

Battery

The capacity of the built-in battery is 5000 mAh.

Autonomy indicators

The battery life was tested using the Battery HD app. The results are shown in the illustrations below.

Recharging speed

OPPO Reno12 FS 5G is recharged using a 45W standard adapter. From zero to 100 percent, the charge is replenished in just over 70 minutes. And 10 minutes of charging will be enough for 5 hours of autonomy in video viewing mode, or 6.2 hours of continuous “chatter” on the phone. You must admit that these are very good results.

Another remarkable feature is the long-lasting battery. It is guaranteed that after 4 years of operation of this smartphone model, the battery capacity will decrease by only 20%. If you don’t change your phone often, you have another reason to buy the OPPO Reno12 FS 5G.

Speakers

OPPO Reno12 FS 5G has a separate earpiece speaker and a separate loudspeaker. Everything has already been said above about the placement of both.

Sound quality and key settings

In terms of sound quality, there are no problems. The capabilities of the earpiece speaker are sufficient even if the call takes place in a noisy avenue or square. The speaker “beats” the audio track well when playing a YouTube video, and with YouTube Music, the user can listen to his favorite songs just as well. The sound of games will also be a pleasure.

As for the settings. In general, here we have a similar “arsenal” to that which we met in the OPPO A3x review + a few personalities. The most interesting one is Holo Audio. The latter allows you to play sound from multiple sources simultaneously from different points in space. Well, another plus for spatial sound.

ColorOS 15

Out of the box, the OPPO Reno12 FS 5G will run the ColorOS 15.0 operating system.

Pre-installed applications

Among the interesting out-of-the-box applications, I would point out Music Party (synchronizes multiple phones to play the same song), Facebook, the entire Google suite (Google One, Google TV, Home, etc.), Linkedin, Meet, O Relax, and many others.

Communications

The following wireless modules and interfaces are noteworthy:

  • Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), 802.11 a/b/g/n/, WLAN 2.4G/WLAN 5G;
  • Bluetooth 5.3, Low Energy, SBC, AAC, aptX, LDAC;
  • USB Type-С;
  • NFC та ін.

System performance of the OPPO Reno12 FS 5G

Next, note the results of the system performance tests. Traditionally, we do this with the help of specialized testers.

Thanks to AI, the user can do some interesting things with the photos. For example, you can remove passersby and unwanted objects in just a few taps, cut objects, add emojis, stickers, funny backgrounds, and much more. As a result, magical memories turn into perfect images. It’s worth a try.
