OpenAI plans to reduce the share of Microsoft payments by 2030

OpenAI plans to pay its investor and close partner Microsoft a smaller share of its revenue by 2030 than it does now, The Information reports, citing financial documents.

The news comes after OpenAI this week changed course on a major restructuring to implement a new plan that calls for its for-profit unit to become a public benefit corporation (PBC) but continue to be controlled by its nonprofit unit.

Currently, OpenAI has a 20% revenue sharing agreement with Microsoft, but the AI company told investors that by the end of this decade, it plans to share 10% of its revenue with its business partners, including Microsoft, The Information reports.

Microsoft has invested tens of billions of dollars in OpenAI, and the two companies currently have a contract until 2030 that provides for revenue sharing on both sides. The agreement also gives Microsoft the rights to OpenAI’s intellectual property in its artificial intelligence products, as well as exclusive rights to OpenAI’s API in Azure.

As Bloomberg reported on Monday, Microsoft has yet to approve OpenAI’s proposed corporate structure, as the tech major reportedly wants to make sure the new structure protects its multibillion-dollar investment.
