OpenAI, the company behind the revolutionary ChatGPT, is reportedly in advanced discussions to secure a significant funding round of approximately $30 billion. Sources familiar with the matter reveal that the AI giant is seeking major investment from several United Arab Emirates-based funds, including Abu Dhabi’s MGX, to serve as cornerstone investors.
A Consortium of Middle Eastern Investors
According to reports from Bloomberg, these UAE funds are expected to form an investment consortium, potentially contributing as much as $10 billion collectively towards this substantial financing round. This move highlights the growing interest and strategic investment from Middle Eastern entities in cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies.
Adding further weight to the potential deal, financial powerhouse BlackRock Inc. is also in talks to join this funding round alongside the UAE consortium. While the negotiations are ongoing and final details may still shift, the scale of this proposed investment underscores OpenAI’s ambitious growth plans and the immense capital required to sustain its leading position in AI research and development.
Strategic Fundraising Amidst Growth and IPO Delays
This $30 billion fundraising effort comes with a pre-money valuation of an astounding $1.4 trillion. OpenAI has reportedly prioritized its work on AI safety, leading to a postponement of its initial public offering (IPO) plans until at least next year. This strategic delay suggests a focus on solidifying its technological advancements and safety protocols before entering the public market.
The company’s previous funding round in March of this year raised $12.2 billion, valuing OpenAI at $85.2 billion. The current proposed valuation represents a significant leap, indicating strong investor confidence in OpenAI’s future prospects.
Middle Eastern Investment in AI Accelerates
OpenAI is not alone in seeking substantial capital from well-funded Middle Eastern investors. Leading AI companies like Anthropic PBC are also actively pursuing similar funding avenues to meet the burgeoning costs associated with developing and operating advanced AI software. MGX, which has previously invested in both OpenAI and Anthropic, recently completed a fundraising of nearly $50 billion to bolster its AI infrastructure and related technologies.
Existing Investors Show Continued Support
OpenAI is also reportedly engaging with its existing investors, including the University of California endowment, inviting them to participate in this new funding round. Long-standing backers such as Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz are also in discussions regarding increased investments, signaling continued faith in OpenAI’s vision and technological prowess.
A Unique Valuation Approach
In a departure from typical venture financing, OpenAI appears to be directly offering investors a fixed pre-money valuation of $1.4 trillion, even before a lead investor is finalized. This approach contrasts with the usual process where investors submit terms, and a lead investor is negotiated. This direct valuation strategy could streamline the funding process and reflect OpenAI’s strong negotiating position in the current AI landscape.
