It looks like OpenAI is building its own X-like social network, according to a report by The Verge. We don’t have many details, but we do know that there is an internal prototype that adds a social feed to the ChatGPT image generation tool.
It remains unclear if OpenAI will launch this social network as a standalone application or if it will be integrated into the ChatGPT application, as the prototype indicates. The report says that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been asking for feedback on the social network from people outside the company.
One possible reason for this move is that the app will allow OpenAI to collect data from users in real time to train its AI models. It is also a potentially diversification move for the company.
Although it is not known whether this project will ever see the light of day, one thing is for sure – it will most likely not please Elon Musk, who owns the X Company. Altman and OpenAI have been in conflict with Musk for some time now. The company rejected his offer to buy OpenAI, instead offering to “buy Twitter” for only $9.7 billion. It’s worth noting that this offer is four times lower than Musk paid for the platform, and that Altman deliberately used the word Twitter rather than X.
OpenAI also recently filed a counterclaim against Musk, accusing the billionaire of organizing press attacks and malicious campaigns against the company on X. The lawsuit also accuses Musk of “litigation harassment,” referring to his original lawsuit, and of “a bogus bid to acquire OpenAI’s assets.”
The company also published an email from Musk’s time at OpenAI in which he proposed a merger with Tesla. Altman and his team stated that Musk was present during negotiations on the commercialization of OpenAI and that he offered to give him a controlling stake, control of the board of directors, and the position of CEO. Musk left OpenAI in 2018 and founded xAI, which somehow just bought X in some shady uroboros of corporate deception.
