Nvidia RTX 5090 can cost much more than most gaming PCs

We know quite a bit about Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards, but the only thing worth paying attention to besides their main features is their price. According to the latest leaks and rumors, the RTX 5080 and the top-of-the-line Nvidia RTX 5090 may require consumers to open their wallets wide enough to accommodate one of these massive rumored cards. Well-known insiders have hinted that the 5090 could cost up to 40% more than the 4090 at launch.

Nvidia has yet to confirm that the 50 series exists at all, let alone provide pricing details, but there are enough leaks and rumors to suggest that the cards will be expensive. Twitter user @wnxod, who has shared some accurate information about the hardware, posted an image of the price list for the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 in Chinese yuan. As spotted by WCCFTech over the weekend, the cards will cost 18,999 yuan and 9,999 yuan respectively. That would be around $2,600 and $1,400 for the 5090 and 5080.

None of this should affect the price of Nvidia RTX 5080 and 5090. These figures are unconfirmed, and prices in the US will differ from their Chinese counterparts due to 13% VAT in China. With this tax, the price of the 5090 will be closer to $2,200. Nevertheless, we fully expect the rumored top-of-the-line Blackwell GPU to cost more than the 40-series. Rumors based on Google search listings show that the 5090 has 32GB of GDDR7 memory. Other leaks mention that the 5090 will have 21,760 FP32 CUDA cores, which is 5,000 more than the previous generation. According to the leaks, the 5080 should be slightly better than its Ada Lovelace sibling, with 16GB of VRAM and 1024 CUDA cores.

Even if the Chinese prices are accurate, Nvidia may change them before the release. However, he hints that Nvidia’s next-generation cards could cost almost 40% more than the 4090 at launch. This 2022 GPU cost $1600 in October 2022. The RTX 4080 cost $1200 when it debuted. Today you can find both for less, though not by much. They will continue to drop in price with the 50th series, although it will take time to see a similar drop in Blackwell prices.

Over the weekend, YouTuber Vex also shared leaked pricing information indicating the price of 50-series cards in Australia. According to the YouTuber, the 5080 could cost over AU$2,500 or over $1,500 in the US. These prices are for a likely Asus DUAL variant, although we don’t know what configuration it will include.

All we know at this point is speculation, and you should take it with a grain of salt. Expectations for the next top-of-the-line GPU indicate that they will be much more expensive cards than ever, which makes me shudder to think about the prices of any laptop that dares to install Nvidia’s top-of-the-line GPU inside.

This is why the cost of the rumored RTX 5070, 5060, and 5060 Ti will be so important. It is assumed that all of these cards will be upgraded compared to the 40-series, but with a more minor increase. The RTX 5080, especially the 5090, seems to be focused on AI processes, graphics, and gaming. The leaked data on the amount of VRAM in both high-end cards will be especially important for AI capabilities. According to the WCCFTech report, the 5060 and 5060 Ti will be much more conservative. The 5060 will allegedly have only 8 GB of RAM. The Ti version will have 16 GB, as will the 5070 (rumored by @kopite7kimi) and 5080.

Nvidia doesn’t have many competitors in the top-end GPU market. There are rumors that AMD will also share information about its RX 8000 series cards. We don’t yet know whether the estimated cost of the next-generation RTX corresponds to their actual performance. At least we won’t have to wait long to find out. CES 2025 will start on January 6. Nvidia’s keynote presentation will take place on that day at 18:30 Pacific Time and 21:30 Eastern Time.
