NVIDIA and Foxconn have teamed up to build a supercomputer in Taiwan that they call an “artificial intelligence factory.” The project, which NVIDIA announced at Computex, “will provide state-of-the-art NVIDIA Blackwell infrastructure to researchers, startups, and industry,” according to the company. NVIDIA is also building a new local headquarters in Taiwan.
The supercomputer will be equipped with 10,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs. NVIDIA claims that the project will significantly increase the availability of AI computing and support local researchers and businesses. By the way, the Taiwan National Science and Technology Council is investing in the project. It will offer the cloud computing resources of the AI supercomputer to those who are part of its technological ecosystem.
“Our plan is to create an AI-focused industrial ecosystem in southern Taiwan,” said Council Minister Wu Chen-wen in a statement. “We are focused on investing in innovative research, developing a strong AI industry, and encouraging the everyday use of AI tools. Our ultimate goal is to create an AI smart island filled with smart cities, and we look forward to working with NVIDIA and [Foxconn] to make this vision a reality.”
Foxconn, which is providing the supercomputer’s AI infrastructure through its subsidiary Big Innovation Company, will also use the system to further its work in smart cities, electric vehicles, and manufacturing. For example, it aims to optimize connected transportation systems and other “civilian resources” in smart cities, as well as develop advanced driver assistance and safety systems.
TSMC also hopes to benefit from the project. The company’s researchers will have access to the supercomputer’s power in the hope of accelerating their research work.
NVIDIA made this announcement on the same day it released its GeForce RTX 5060 GPU. In our review, we gave the RTX 5060 Ti a score of 85.
