New mouse pad from Razer wirelessly charges mice

Razer has announced a new mouse pad that can wirelessly charge a wireless mouse while it is in use. This isn’t Razer’s first attempt at this idea, but the new HyperFlux V2 doesn’t require the use of one specific mouse – it works with multiple models from Razer’s current lineup, charging their batteries continuously with the included adapter puck. It looks and sounds very similar to Logitech’s patented Powerplay wireless charging system.

The HyperFlux V2 wireless charging system is available in two versions for $119.99. One with a hard surface, which is available now, and one with a soft fabric surface, which is expected to be available later this year. The original Razer HyperFlux model was sold in a bundle for $249.99, which included the Mamba HyperFlux mouse. The V2 model does not come with a mouse, but is compatible with Razer’s Basilisk V3 Pro 35K, Basilisk V3 Pro, Cobra Pro, and Naga V2 Pro mice, which cost between $129.99 and $179.99.

The Mamba HyperFlux mouse, which worked with the original version of the HyperFlux mouse pad, had a supercapacitor inside that retained energy for 5-10 seconds when it was removed from the pad. This was enough time for you to reposition the mouse without turning it off, but you needed a USB cable to use it elsewhere.

The new HyperFlux V2 instead uses a puck that slots into the bottom of supported mouse models that charges the batteries wirelessly while they’re on the mat, just like competitor Logitech. An LED indicator at the top of the mat shows the battery level by changing color.

Just like the original version, the new HyperFlux V2 mat also doubles as a receiver, allowing Razer mice and keyboards to connect wirelessly to a PC (via the mat, which connects to the computer via USB) using proprietary HyperSpeed technology that is faster and more reliable than Bluetooth. The mat is also compatible with Razer’s wireless keyboards, including the BlackWidow V3 Pro and DeathStalker V2 Pro, but it cannot charge them wirelessly.

The Verge has reached out to Logitech for comment, as well as Razer to clarify whether the new wirelessly charging mouse pad uses a different approach than the patented Powerplay system. We will update this article if they respond.
