Google has announced a new AI feature that uses Gemini’s AI bot to add events to your Google Calendar based on data from emails sent to Gmail.
Emails that Gemini thinks are events will get a new “Add to Calendar” button that triggers an interaction. When you tap it, a Gemini tooltip sidebar will open, confirming the event was added and, based on a screenshot provided by Google, giving you an edit button if you need to change anything. You could already add events using the Gemini sidebar, but now it’s done automatically.
The feature is similar to previous innocuous Google features that automatically added or updated events in Google Calendar based on certain types of emails about meetings or travel. Google says the changes are already rolling out to Workspace for business users, enterprise and education users, and Google One AI Premium subscribers.
When I tried this feature, it worked well and even identified that there were two separate events in my test email. But it didn’t work quite as Google described it would — instead of just saying it had added the event, it confirmed the details and asked if I wanted to add them to my calendar. When I said yes, it added them but didn’t provide an edit button in the sidebar. I could click on the event to go directly to it in Google Calendar, which is very convenient.
