NES Tetris will join the Nintendo Switch Online library on December 12. Nintendo of America announced this today on X. Tetris was released on the NES back in 1989, so this classic game has been waiting to return to Nintendo consoles for a long time.
That doesn’t mean there weren’t many other ways to play Tetris. Tetris is an ever-popular puzzle game, with many official versions and many knockoffs. And many of them, such as Tetris Effect, are extremely good. But it’s the NES version that is most often called the best of all. It was this iteration that was used in the addictive competitive Tetris circuit, and even after more than three decades, a player managed to “beat” the game only by hacking its little computer brain. For those of us who missed out on the NES era, or those whose console has long since gathered dust, finally having a modern way to play this iconic version of Tetris is very welcome news.
Over the past few weeks, the Switch Online service has received several notable updates. A trio of Sega Genesis titles have been added to the Switch’s online library, and Nintendo has also released a music streaming app for subscription plan members. And while that’s all well and good, the truly exciting event will be the long-awaited Switch 2 announcement, expected in March.
