NASA has unveiled another stunning image as part of its “Astronomy Picture of the Day” (APOD) project. This time, the spotlight is on the unusual sight of noctilucent clouds, also known as night-shining clouds, captured over Sweden. This phenomenon, occurring at extremely high altitudes, offers a unique perspective of Earth even when darkness has fallen on the surface.

Twilight’s Luminous Play

As the Earth rotates and casts its shadow, dawn and dusk phenomena extend higher. While twilight settles on the ground, sunlight still illuminates clouds situated high in the atmosphere. Typically, this creates beautiful sunsets, but exceptionally high-flying noctilucent clouds remain visible long after darkness descends. Usually too faint to be noticed, they become invisible during the summer months when illuminated by sunlight positioned below the horizon.

High-Altitude Visitors: The Secrets of Noctilucent Clouds

Noctilucent clouds, scientifically known as polar mesospheric clouds, are the highest clouds formed in Earth’s atmosphere. The presented image, taken in early August, showcases a network of blue-tinged noctilucent clouds stretching across the distant sky above a field of green grass near Linköping, Sweden. The silhouettes of trees are clearly defined against the horizon. While much has been learned about these enigmatic clouds in the past two decades, the precise mechanisms of their formation and evolution remain an active area of scientific research.
