Microsoft has officially launched Copilot for Legal, a specialized AI tool designed to assist legal professionals with a suite of over 20 AI Skills tailored for legal tasks. Announced by Microsoft Vice Chairman and President Brad Smith via a tweet on October 16th, this new offering integrates AI capabilities directly into the workflow of legal experts.

AI-Powered Legal Assistance

These specialized AI Skills are built as plugins within Copilot, focusing on specific legal responsibilities. Tasks such as drafting contracts, reviewing agreements, tracking obligations, and compiling case timelines are now streamlined through these AI assistants. Microsoft emphasized that these tools are intended to augment, not replace, the critical judgment of legal professionals, with AI-generated citations, conclusions, and suggested revisions requiring human verification.

Integration with Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 Copilot, incorporating these legal AI Skills, is primarily accessible through Microsoft Word and the cross-application intelligent workspace, Cowork. In Word, Copilot can review contracts against enterprise-defined playbooks, identify critical clauses, and propose modifications in track-changes mode. It can also leverage approval templates or historical agreements stored in SharePoint to generate new contract drafts and legal memos, with users retaining control to accept or reject each proposed change.

Streamlining Complex Workflows with Cowork

For more intricate, multi-step legal processes, Cowork offers advanced capabilities. It can extract key obligations, deadlines, and trigger conditions from contracts, emails, meeting minutes, and other documents. The platform facilitates the comparison of different agreement clauses, the construction of case timelines, and the summarization of meeting content into formal minutes and resolutions.

Partnerships with Legal Tech Leaders

Microsoft is also introducing plugins developed by leading legal technology companies. These partnerships include prominent names such as Bloomberg Law, Thomson Reuters HighQ, DocuSign, Harvey, Relativity, iManage, and NetDocuments. These third-party plugins extend Copilot’s reach into areas like legal research, document management, electronic signatures, e-discovery, and transaction management. The availability of these plugins will be gradual, rolling out through the Microsoft Plugin Registry, with actual usability varying based on region, licensing, and administrator configurations.

Requirements for Use

To utilize Copilot for Legal, businesses need a commercial Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Additionally, administrators must ensure the Word environment, supported languages, and plugin configurations are correctly set up. This release marks a significant step in integrating advanced AI into the legal sector, aiming to enhance efficiency and accuracy for legal practitioners worldwide.
