Marvel’s Wolverine Criticized for Overly Helpful Guidance

Insomniac Games, known for its acclaimed single-player superhero titles, finds its latest release, Marvel’s Wolverine, facing significant criticism, making it one of PlayStation’s less favorably reviewed games in recent years. A major point of contention among reviewers is the game’s design for its guided assistance features.

Overly Handholdy Gameplay Sparks Outrage

A highly discussed review from Skill Up highlights a core issue: the game’s pervasive and overt handholding throughout the player’s experience. Critics point to numerous explicit prompts designed to guide players through narrow, linear environments. A particularly prevalent example is the blue, scent-trail-like indicator simulating Wolverine’s sense of smell, pointing players directly to their next objective.

Insomniac Games further amplifies these directional cues with additional markers placed along the blue trail, repeatedly reminding players of the intended path. Following combat encounters, the game doesn’t stop there; Logan himself offers monologues to explicitly state current mission objectives. Even traversal sequences, like parkour segments, utilize the classic graffiti tag method to mark the route through the environment.

This accumulation of design choices has drawn considerable flak. Skill Up directly stated that the game’s design philosophy seems to assume players lack basic comprehension skills.

“The design philosophy in Wolverine assumes the player is very stupid.”

Unfailiable QTEs and Unclosable Guidance

Further critiques target the Quick Time Events (QTEs) within Marvel’s Wolverine, which reportedly cannot be failed. Players can apparently ignore QTE prompts entirely, and the game’s narrative will still progress without consequence. While some players noted that certain accessibility options can be manually disabled, many of these guiding features are enabled by default.

Alarmingly, the prominent blue navigation trail, humorously dubbed “stinky trail” by reviewer Gene Park, cannot be disabled. This persistent, unclosable guidance system is a significant factor contributing to the controversy surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine.

Overall, while Marvel’s Wolverine is not deemed a failure as a game, it is perceived as a highly formulaic superhero action experience that fails to offer any truly distinctive or standout features. The game’s overbearing guidance system has overshadowed potential positives, leaving many players feeling patronized rather than engaged.
