The popular custom Android ROM, LineageOS, has officially launched its latest major update, LineageOS 24. This new version is built upon the foundation of Android 17, bringing a host of improvements and updated features to users looking for a near-stock Android experience.
LineageOS 24: A Swift Transition to Android 17
Since the release of Android 17 in June, the LineageOS team has been diligently working to adapt all the new changes and functionalities. While Android 17’s initial release focused on iterative improvements and UI/UX enhancements, the LineageOS developers were able to leverage their prior experience with significant refactoring in recent Android versions. This allowed them to build the Android 17-based codebase for LineageOS faster than anticipated.
Security and App Updates
Security remains a top priority, and LineageOS 24 reflects this commitment. The latest security patches, extending through August 2025 to October 2026, have been integrated into LineageOS versions 18.1 through 24.0. For users on the legacy branches, security patches up to November 2025 have been merged into versions 15.1, 16.0, and 17.1, ensuring a secure experience across a wide range of supported devices.
In terms of applications, LineageOS 24 sees many of its built-in apps updated with the modern Material Design 3 Expressive aesthetic. This includes popular tools like the Canvas image editor, the Catapult Android TV launcher, and the Jelly web browser. These updates not only provide a fresh visual appeal but also incorporate layout optimizations specifically for tablets and Android TV devices, enhancing usability on larger screens.
Simplified Installation with WebUSB
Making the installation process even more accessible, the LineageOS team is introducing a browser-based flashing tool. This new utility leverages WebUSB technology, enabling direct communication with compatible devices straight from the user’s web browser. This move aims to significantly reduce the hassle of searching for, downloading, and running separate flashing tools, making the installation of LineageOS a more streamlined experience for both new and experienced users.
Looking Ahead
The release of LineageOS 24 on Android 17 marks another significant milestone for the custom ROM community. By providing timely updates and focusing on user experience, security, and ease of installation, LineageOS continues to be a leading choice for Android enthusiasts seeking an open and customizable mobile operating system.
