Light Phone III is officially available for purchase

Light, the company that created a pair of minimalist phones, has just released the Light Phone III. This is the perfect device for those who are tired of modern smartphones with their easy access to mindscrolling and a lot of shaky artificial intelligence tools.

Light Phone III features a sleek black and white OLED display, which is a new design element. Previous models had e-paper screens. However, the main advantage is not what this phone has, but what it does not have. It has no third-party applications. There is no access to social media, the Internet, or even email. It is designed to be a phone first and foremost.

This model has a built-in NFC chip for making payments, a bare-bones music player, podcast player, messaging app, flashlight, voice memos, calendar, timer, and alarm clock. It also includes a simple camera system that was inspired by point-and-shoot models. This is a two-stage shutter button with center focus and a fixed focal length. The company calls it “really fun.”

The Light Phone III has a navigation application that is probably the most useful part of modern smartphones, but with a twist. The company has paid for private access to the navigation information, so Here (the mapping platform that runs the app) has no idea where you are going or what you are looking for.

Other specs include 6GB of RAM, up from 1GB on the Light Phone II, 128GB of storage, and a newer Qualcomm chip. There’s a fingerprint ID on the power button, a USB-C port, and a pair of speakers on the bottom. The battery is also replaceable, which is a huge bonus. It’s bigger than previous generations, and I think it’s quite nice. It’s about the same width as a modern iPhone, but much shorter. According to the company, this was done on purpose to make it easier to type while holding it vertically.

There is some bad news here. The Light Phone III costs $799, which is half the price of the second-generation model (although it’s a much more powerful device). Nevertheless, you can still pre-order it for $599 – let’s see how long it lasts.
