In a significant shift for public transportation in Japan, seven major railway companies, including JR East, Keisei Electric Railway, and Keikyu Corporation, announced today that they will be phasing out traditional magnetic stripe tickets in favor of QR code tickets starting next spring.

Farewell to Magnetic Tickets

This transition will primarily affect short-distance tickets purchased from automatic vending machines. The move is driven by the increasing difficulty in maintaining the aging magnetic ticket infrastructure, including dedicated ticket gates and vending machines.

The adoption of QR code tickets is expected to streamline operations and enhance passenger experience. A key benefit will be the introduction of a unified system for managing ticket information across the participating companies. This unified system will pave the way for issuing cross-company QR code tickets, allowing passengers to travel seamlessly across different railway lines with a single ticket.

New Ticket Format and Usage

The physical dimensions of the new QR code tickets will also change. They will be larger than the current magnetic tickets, measuring 57.5 x 85mm, offering approximately 2.8 times the area of the older 30 x 57.5mm magnetic tickets. This larger size will accommodate the QR code and associated travel information.

Using the new QR code tickets will be straightforward for passengers. Upon entering a station, travelers will simply need to present their ticket to the designated scanner at the ticket gate. For exiting, the tickets will be collected in a dedicated bin at the gate. For stations that are not yet equipped with dedicated QR code ticket gates, passengers will be able to complete their exit procedures at the manned ticket windows.

Consortium of Rail Operators

The initiative was initially announced in May 2024 by eight railway companies, who planned to gradually replace magnetic tickets with QR code alternatives. However, due to the integration of the Shin-Keisei Electric Railway into Keisei Electric Railway in April 2025, the number of participating companies in this rollout has been finalized at seven. These companies are:

  • JR East (East Japan Railway Company)
  • Keisei Electric Railway
  • Keikyu Corporation
  • Sendai Airport Railway
  • Tokyo Monorail
  • Tobu Railway
  • Hokuso Railway

The railway companies are reportedly in ongoing discussions regarding the operational details of integrated services, especially concerning through services where passengers transfer between different companies’ lines without needing to re-purchase tickets. Specific arrangements for these services are expected to be announced at a later date.

This significant technological upgrade represents a forward-thinking approach by Japan’s railway operators to modernize their ticketing systems, improve efficiency, and offer greater convenience to the millions of passengers who rely on these services daily.
