Instagram is testing the ability for users to repost posts, the company confirmed to TechCrunch on Monday. The move comes as no surprise, as the social network was seen developing this feature back in 2022.
Some users have reported seeing this feature on their accounts, and one of them noted that users will be able to repost their own content in addition to other users’ posts.
Of course, not everyone will be on board if Instagram decides to officially implement this change, especially since it will add another content format to a platform already overflowing with posts, stories, videos, notes, DMs, ads, etc.
On the other hand, some people will welcome this change because it will allow them to share interesting content as they already do on other platforms.
While you can currently share someone’s post on your Story, the upcoming repost feature will allow you to repost a post on your Instagram Feed. In addition, some people currently use workarounds and third-party apps to repost content, so the official repost feature will eliminate the need for them to look for alternatives.
As for authors, the repost feature can be a way for them to increase their reach and visibility. Additionally, Instagram is flooded with reposts of memes and photos that often don’t include links to the original authors, so adding a repost feature can help ensure that authors are properly rewarded when their content is shared widely.
It makes sense for Instagram to introduce the reposting option, especially since this format has been adopted by other social networks such as Threads and TikTok. It is worth noting that reposts were popularized by the introduction of the Retweet feature on Twitter back in 2009.
As with any other test feature, it is not known when or if Instagram plans to release the repost feature to all users.
