Instagram is developing an app for iPad

The social network Instagram has existed since 2010, but it still does not have a dedicated iPad app. In fact, the last time we heard about the network’s interest in tablets was in 2022, when Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said that there were simply not enough iPad users to develop a native app. An unclear position, but it may finally change.

Recently, a current employee of the service spoke anonymously to The Information and said that this year, 2025, Instagram is finally working on an iPad app. At the moment, the only way to use Instagram on the iPad is through a larger version of the company’s iPhone app. Most companies realized a decade ago that repurposing a phone app is not the best user experience because the aspect ratio on a tablet is significantly different. This is especially noticeable if your service is focused on photo and video content.

The sudden interest in the iPad may be part of a broader effort by Instagram to fight for social media dominance, as popular video platform TikTok faces a potential ban in the United States. The Information also reports that Instagram recently previewed its upcoming Edits video editing app, which will compete with CapCut, a rival service also owned by ByteDance that is at risk of being banned by TikTok.

Mosseri also spoke about plans to improve Instagram’s content search capabilities. “You can imagine, whatever you use Instagram for, it would be great to be able to find ‘it’ more easily,” he said in an episode of the Build Your Tribe podcast. “But also for creators… it should allow content to appear over and over again so you don’t get all of its value in the first 24 or 48 hours.”
