Huawei has announced a significant milestone for its earthquake early warning service: the platform has now surpassed 100 million users. This achievement comes one year after Huawei integrated official data from the China Earthquake Early Warning Network (CEEWN) into its devices.

A Strategic Partnership for Public Safety

Last year, Huawei entered into a strategic partnership with the China National Seismic Network Center. This collaboration led to the integration of official CEEWN data sources into HarmonyOS version 6.0 and above. The company has committed to smoothly transitioning all historical models to this system by May 2026, ensuring that every Huawei user can receive authoritative earthquake alert information.

Huawei emphasized that the seismic warning data is provided by the CEEWN. Adhering to the official service specifications for earthquake early warnings, Huawei utilizes a synergistic approach involving both cloud infrastructure and terminal devices to deliver alerts within seconds. In the event of a strong earthquake, users will receive a full-screen pop-up alert accompanied by an alarm sound and guidance on how to take immediate protective actions. This system aims to provide crucial seconds for users to implement emergency避险 measures.

Over the past year, Huawei’s devices have collectively provided earthquake alert services to over 60 million individuals. This initiative underscores Huawei’s commitment to leveraging its technology for public safety and emergency response.

China’s Advancements in Earthquake Early Warning

The China Earthquake Early Warning Network itself has a history of extensive development. According to the China National Seismic Network, the nation’s earthquake early warning technology has undergone more than a decade of research and development, followed by nearly ten years of verification and pilot testing. The formal construction of the National Seismic Intensity Rapid Reporting and Early Warning Project began in 2018. After five years of dedicated effort, the world’s largest earthquake early warning network has been established.

This project represents a significant leap forward, transforming seismic reporting from minute-level speed to second-level early warnings. The overall functionality and performance of the CEEWN are now considered world-class. The network officially passed its acceptance test on July 25, 2024, and is now providing earthquake early warning and seismic intensity rapid reporting information services to the public.

Expanding Reach and Fostering Innovation

The CEEWN is focused on bridging the gap in the final delivery of early warning services, continuously expanding its reach through various channels. On the public service front, the network has expanded its applications to include public service terminals, IPTV, and village loudspeakers. By leveraging rich service channels such as WeChat mini-programs and built-in mobile phone functions, the system ensures that official and authoritative earthquake warning information can be received on any brand or model of smartphone.

Currently, the system boasts the capability to cover hundreds of millions of people and deliver alerts within seconds across a wide area. It serves over 460 million general public users and more than 100 industry users nationwide. To date, it has issued over 700 earthquake early warning alerts, reaching more than 90 million individuals.

Furthermore, the CEEWN has established a rigorous testing system for professional equipment entering the network and a third-party cooperation system for disseminating earthquake early warning information. This has spurred innovation in the research and development of professional seismic equipment. The initiative has attracted participation from major state-owned enterprises, including China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Tower, as well as leading market players like Huawei and Tencent. This broad participation injects vitality into the market, driving development and cultivating a burgeoning market for earthquake early warning within the safety and emergency response industry.
