China has officially launched the authorized operation of its national satellite navigation and positioning ground station network data. This significant move marks the first time data from the nation’s Beidou ground station network is being shared and opened to the public.

The Ministry of Natural Resources announced that the data will be accessible under the principles of safety, controllability, high quality, and efficiency. It is being opened to key industries and market entities, facilitating the compliant circulation of public ground station data and unlocking the economic and social value of spatiotemporal data elements.

Reducing Costs and Expanding Applications

Chen Ming, director of the Basic Surveying and Mapping Division at the Ministry of Natural Resources’ National Surveying and Mapping Geographic Information Bureau, highlighted the benefits of this initiative. Previously, many industries had to build their own ground stations, incurring substantial costs for initial setup and ongoing maintenance.

“Through this shared opening, we effectively broaden the application scenarios for Beidou’s high-precision data services,” Chen stated. He pointed to areas such as autonomous driving, the low-altitude economy, urban renewal, and refined urban governance as key beneficiaries.

A Foundation for High-Precision Positioning

Satellite navigation and positioning ground stations are the fundamental ground infrastructure that enables Beidou’s high-precision positioning services. These stations are crucial for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of location-based services.

According to the latest data, the nationwide Beidou ground station network now comprises 7,569 stations, covering the entire country. This extensive network provides stable and precise spatiotemporal information support for various fields, including national land planning, disaster early warning, engineering construction, and urban management.

Compliance and Future Development

The data being shared from the Beidou ground station network has completed unified registration in the national public data resource system. This ensures the data’s compliance for circulation and market-based development.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Natural Resources plans to continue optimizing the overall layout of the national ground station network. The ministry will also deepen the development of data resources and enhance refined operations, further solidifying the high-precision spatiotemporal data foundation for the construction of a digital China.

This opening of Beidou ground station data is expected to accelerate innovation and development across numerous sectors that rely on accurate positioning, contributing significantly to China’s technological advancement and economic growth.
