Huawei is accelerating its artificial intelligence hardware roadmap, with the Ascend 960 chip now slated for a Q1 2027 release, a full three quarters ahead of its original schedule. This announcement was made by Huawei’s Rotating Chairman, William Xu (Wang Tao), during the Huawei Connect 2026 conference.

Ascend 960: Performance Leap Forward

The Ascend 960 chip promises a significant performance doubling compared to its predecessor. The Ascend 960DT (Data Center Training) version is set to launch in Q1 2027, while the Ascend 960PR (Production/Inference) model will follow in Q3 2027, a quarter earlier than initially planned.

Aggressive AI Development Cadence

This accelerated release schedule underscores Huawei’s commitment to a rapid, year-on-year evolution of its Ascend AI chip lineup. Following the Ascend 960, the company plans to introduce the Ascend 970 in 2028 and the Ascend 980 in 2029, maintaining a swift development pace to stay at the forefront of AI compute technology.

Ascend 950: Building the Foundation

Huawei had previously unveiled the Ascend 950 architecture at the Huawei Connect 2025 conference. This architecture introduced several key enhancements, including support for lower-precision data formats, boosted vector computing power, a 2.5x increase in interconnect bandwidth, and the integration of Huawei’s proprietary High Bandwidth Memory (HBM).

Specifically, the Ascend 950PR was designed to enhance inference prefill performance and optimize recommendation engine performance, featuring the company’s self-developed HiBL 1.0 HBM. The Ascend 950DT focused on improving inference decode performance and training efficiency, incorporating increased memory capacity and bandwidth.

The earlier plan had pegged the Ascend 960 chip for a Q4 2027 release, making the new Q1 2027 launch for the DT variant a substantial acceleration. This move indicates Huawei’s strategic push to gain a competitive edge in the rapidly expanding AI hardware market, likely in response to global trends and demands for more powerful and efficient AI processing capabilities.

Huawei’s sustained investment in its Ascend line demonstrates its ambition to be a major player in the AI infrastructure landscape, providing foundational technology for a wide range of AI applications, from large-scale training to real-time inference.
