A Google software patch for older Chromecast devices that did not participate in the casting has already been launched, according to an email the company sent to owners of affected devices. You can view the email on the Google Nest community pages. If you have not reset your device to factory settings, it may already be working.
However, if you are still unable to transfer, Google recommends that you restart your device and try again. All Chromecasts that are accidentally reset to factory settings will need to be reconnected in the latest version of the Google Home app (either version 3.30.106 on iOS or version 3.30.1.6 on Android). The app update is apparently still trickling out to all devices, so if you don’t see it now, you will in a few days.
Some second-generation Chromecast dongles and Chromecast Audio first lost their casting ability early last week. Before Google promised to fix the problem, many speculated that this was the beginning of the slow death of Google’s Chromecast line. Google no longer sells Chromecast, having abandoned the name and dongle-style devices after the release of Google TV Streamer in August 2024. As this relatively quick fix shows, even if the company isn’t selling them, it has no intention of ending support for existing Chromecasts – at least not yet.
