Google introduces speech translation in Meet. During I/O on Tuesday, Google introduced a new feature powered by Gemini that can translate what you say into the language of your interlocutor.
Google claims that the AI-generated translation will preserve the sound of your voice, intonation, and facial expressions. The feature is being rolled out in beta to users who subscribe to the Google AI Pro plan or the recently announced AI Ultra subscription, which costs $249.99 per month.
In the demonstration video shown by Google, an English-speaking user joins a conversation with a Spanish-speaking colleague. As soon as the colleague turns on Gemini speech translation, Meet begins to duplicate what they are saying with an AI-generated English translation that includes all voice intonations – and vice versa.
Microsoft Teams similarly launched an AI translation feature in a preview version earlier this year.
Currently, Meet can only translate from English and Spanish, but Google plans to add support for Italian, German, and Portuguese in the “coming weeks.”
