After nearly a decade of service, Google Assistant on mobile devices is gradually being phased out, making way for the more advanced AI capabilities of Gemini. Google officially began this transition on September 4th, notifying Android users via email.
The Transition Begins
Starting September 4th, Google Assistant services on mobile devices will commence their withdrawal. Eligible Android devices will automatically switch over to Gemini. This migration process is expected to take several weeks, with users unable to revert to or continue using Google Assistant on their phones, tablets, or paired devices once the switch is complete.
Beyond Phones and Tablets
The shift extends beyond just smartphones and tablets. When users designate Gemini as their default mobile assistant, compatible devices paired with their phones will also adopt Gemini. This includes Wear OS smartwatches and supported headphones. Vehicles using Android Auto via their phone will also transition to Gemini. However, cars with integrated Google systems will retain Google Assistant for now. Furthermore, Gemini is slated for a gradual rollout to other Google devices such as Google TV and Google Home smart speakers.
Gemini: The Successor
Since its launch in 2016, Google Assistant has been the primary voice interface within the Android ecosystem, handling tasks like voice search, setting reminders, and controlling smart home devices. In contrast, Gemini is built upon generative AI models. This foundation allows it to understand and respond to more complex natural language requests, generate content, engage in multi-turn conversations, and demonstrate a deeper level of information comprehension.
Google has previously announced its intention for Gemini to fully replace Google Assistant across a wide range of devices, including Android phones, tablets, cars, watches, and televisions. For devices that do not meet the minimum configuration requirements for Gemini (Android 9 or later with at least 2GB of RAM), or for users in regions where Gemini service is not yet available, Google Assistant will remain functional temporarily until the overall retirement plan concludes.
