GM to stop production of Chevy Blazer with gas engine

According to GM Authority sources, the internal combustion engine version of the Chevy Blazer is being discontinued and will ultimately be offered only as an electric vehicle. Both the Chevy Blazer EV and the Chevy Blazer with a gas engine were assembled at GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico, but since production of the gas Blazer is being discontinued from the 2025 model year, the plant is being converted to accommodate electric vehicles only, according to GM Authority.

In an email to The Verge, Chevy spokesman Chad Lyons said that “we have no changes to the portfolio and will not comment on speculation.”

Chevy produces electric and internal combustion engine versions of the mid-size Blazer SUV and the smaller Equinox SUV. The models differ not only in powertrains from their gasoline counterparts, but also in styling and platform. Both the Blazer EV and the Equinox EV use GM’s special platform for electric vehicles (formerly called Ultium) and are built at the same plant in Mexico along with the Cadillac Optiq. The Honda Prologue, which is essentially an updated Blazer EV, is also produced at the same plant.

According to GM Authority, the discontinuation of the gas-powered Blazer means that Chevy no longer produces a two-row SUV with an internal combustion engine in North America. In China, Chevy still uses the three-row SUV nameplate.

In 2024, Chevy sold 52,576 Blazers in the United States, down from 94,599 sold in 2020, when the 2019 model year redesign was introduced. This year, GM also discontinued the Cadillac XT5 and XT6.
