Cyclone in Chennai halts iPhone production

Due to the heavy rains of Cyclone Meehaung, iPhone manufacturers, including Foxconn and Pegatron, temporarily halted production at factories near Chennai in southern India. Prolonged heavy rains caused flooding and led to the closure of the city’s airport, causing significant disruption in the region. However, industry insiders assure that these disruptions will not affect iPhone shipments, as manufacturers keep enough stock in the warehouse to cope with such scenarios. Here’s everything you need to know:

Cyclone Meehaung interrupts iPhone production in Chennai

Sources close to the situation said on Monday that Foxconn, which employs about 35,000 people at its iPhone plant in Tamil Nadu, is assessing the circumstances and has not yet decided whether it will resume production on Tuesday or not.

Moreover, this incident was the second time in recent months that Pegatron had to shut down the plant, following the temporary suspension of iPhone assembly in September due to a fire.

Assessing the impact on iPhone production

Insiders close to Apple told ET Telecom that the closure of the Chennai plant due to extreme weather conditions caused by Cyclone Mikaung will not affect iPhone production in India. Apple is reportedly maintaining sufficient buffer stocks of iPhones in distribution to cope with the disruption, ensuring that the week-long outage can be resolved without affecting supplies.

Production at the Foxconn and Pegatron plants near Chennai, which are vital to Apple’s local assembly and part of the government’s manufacturing-related stimulus program, remains halted despite improving weather conditions.

Apple emphasizes the safety of workers in such situations, as it plans to produce iPhones worth almost Rs. 1 billion in India this fiscal year. The disruptions coincide with the holiday season in Western countries, which is traditionally a peak period for iPhone sales.
