Chinese artificial intelligence models are rapidly asserting dominance in the global market, capturing an overwhelming 89% of corporate spending on open-source AI models, according to a new study. This significant share represents nearly nine-tenths of the entire market.

Menlo Ventures Report Highlights China’s AI Ascendancy

These striking figures were revealed in a report by prominent Silicon Valley venture capital firm Menlo Ventures. The research indicates that AI models originating from China, particularly the Kimi series developed by Moonshot AI, are securing leading positions in corporate adoption.

Kimi Leads the Pack Amidst Fierce Competition

The Menlo Ventures report identifies Moonshot AI’s Kimi model as the frontrunner, commanding a substantial 61% of the corporate expenditure on open-source AI models. This data points to a high level of trust and active integration of this Chinese AI development by businesses worldwide.

Following Kimi is DeepSeek, developed by the company of the same name, which holds a 15% market share. The third position is occupied by Zhipu AI’s GLM model, accounting for 11% of the market.

Western Competitors Lag Behind

In contrast, Western AI developments appear less competitive in this specific segment. Meta Platforms’ Llama series emerges as the most popular Western model within this category. However, its share of corporate spending on open-source AI models stands at a mere 7%, significantly trailing behind the Chinese leaders.

This study underscores China’s considerable achievements in the development and deployment of advanced AI technologies, especially within the crucial open-source model sector, which is seeing widespread adoption by the corporate sector.
