OpenAI shows no signs of slowing down its pace of updates. On Wednesday, the company announced the expansion of ChatGPT Search availability. After launching the tool first to paid subscribers last fall and then to all registered free users in late 2024, anyone can now use ChatGPT Search without having to create an account or log in.
“Just like in the authorized mode, ChatGPT can search the web and provide fast and timely answers with links to relevant web sources directly in ChatGPT,” OpenAI said.
In most cases, ChatGPT automatically searches the web for the most recent information related to your question. Users can also force the chatbot to search the web by clicking the “Search” button below the prompt bar.
In essence, today’s announcement means that OpenAI is ready to compete with Google for search dominance, although I guess it is more concerned with staying ahead of newcomers like DeepSeek. In the last week alone, the company announced the availability of its latest AI model, as well as a new ChatGPT feature called Deep Research. It even unveiled a new logo.
