Apple’s current CEO, John Ternus, has announced a significant milestone: over 95% of the company’s manufacturing in China is now powered by renewable energy. This achievement is the result of dedicated collaboration with Apple’s suppliers.

A Greener Future for Manufacturing

In a recent social media post, John Ternus highlighted this progress, emphasizing the collective effort involved. He stated, “Protecting our shared planet and building a better future for the next generation is worth every effort.” This commitment reflects Apple’s ongoing drive towards environmental sustainability across its global operations.

This latest figure represents a substantial increase from the previous year. In October of last year, Apple reported that over 90% of its Chinese manufacturing operations were utilizing renewable energy, with more than a hundred suppliers contributing to this goal. The company’s strategic investments in clean energy in China have been instrumental in achieving these targets.

Investment in Clean Energy Initiatives

Apple’s commitment to renewable energy in China began with the establishment of its first China Clean Energy Fund in 2018. This fund successfully surpassed its objective of developing over 1 gigawatt of renewable energy projects across 14 provinces in China. Building on this success, Apple launched its second China Clean Energy Fund early last year, with an initial total investment of 720 million RMB.

Further bolstering these efforts, Apple announced an expansion of its second China Clean Energy Fund. The total investment commitment has now grown to $212 million USD (approximately 1.422 billion RMB). This nearly doubles the initial anchor investment of $100 million USD (approximately 671 million RMB) made last year.

These investments are actively supporting renewable energy projects on the ground. For instance, a wind power project located in Guangxi province is being developed with the preliminary investment support from Apple’s second China Clean Energy Fund. This demonstrates a tangible impact of the fund, directly contributing to the expansion of clean energy infrastructure.

The journey towards 95% renewable energy in China’s manufacturing sector is a testament to Apple’s long-term vision and its ability to mobilize its supply chain towards shared environmental goals. This progress not only benefits the environment but also sets a precedent for sustainable manufacturing practices globally.

As Apple continues to push the boundaries of innovation, its commitment to sustainability remains a core pillar of its corporate identity. The company’s proactive approach to investing in and facilitating the adoption of renewable energy sources in its supply chain is a crucial step in addressing climate change and ensuring a healthier planet for future generations.
