Apple to replace Game Center with Xbox-like gaming app

Apple plans to announce a video game app for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV at its Worldwide Developers Conference next week, Bloomberg reports. The app will allow you to launch games that you have installed on your devices and serve as a hub for things like achievements and leaderboards.

Apple is expected to launch its gaming app along with the next version of iOS in September this year, according to Bloomberg. Apparently, it will replace Apple’s Game Center, contain editorial content, and allow access to games that are also available in the App Store. In last year’s 9to5Mac report, the app was described as working similarly to the Xbox app for iPhone.

According to Bloomberg, the Mac version of the new app will allow users to “access games downloaded outside the App Store”.

Bloomberg’s report comes on the heels of news that Apple has acquired its first game studio. The company confirmed to Digital Trends that it has acquired RAC7, a two-person studio that created Sneaky Sasquatch, one of the first games released on Apple’s Arcade game subscription service. RAC7 will not be merged with any of the company’s other teams, but will continue to operate as an independent game studio, Digital Trends reports.
