Apple is working on a number of new XR devices

Apple appears to have big plans to expand its line of augmented reality (XR) devices with the launch of new Vision series headsets and smart glasses, according to a report by supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In his report, Kuo shares Apple’s potential roadmap for seven new head-worn devices, which could include the release of Meta Ray-Ban-like smart glasses, followed by XR glasses with a display.

According to Kuo, Apple may release the M5-based Vision Pro headset this year, and in 2027, it may demonstrate the “significantly lighter” Vision Air. Reportedly, this device will cost less than the $3,499 Vision Pro and will use Apple’s flagship iPhone processor.

Kuo also detailed rumors about Apple’s plans to release smart glasses in 2027 that could support voice control and gesture recognition, as well as the ability to record video with a built-in camera and an “artificial intelligence” feature that detects the environment. Last month, sources told Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman that Apple’s upcoming smart glasses will look like Meta Ray-Bans, “but made better.”

Rumors about Apple’s upcoming smart glasses have been circulating for more than a year and have only intensified after the success of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. Meta recently announced a new pair of glasses with Oakley that can shoot 3K video, while Google is working on its own Android-powered XR glasses.

According to Kuo, in 2028, Apple may release the 2nd generation Vision Pro, which will have a new, “significantly lighter” design and a cheaper price. Apple is also reportedly working on XR glasses with a display equipped with voice control and gesture recognition, which are scheduled for release in 2028.

There are several other devices with more nebulous timelines, including second-generation XR glasses and a device that users can tether to an iPhone or Mac. Kuo reports that the development of the wearable was put on hold due to “insufficient competitive advantage” because Apple’s device would weigh more than competitors’ products.
