Amazon is significantly expanding its Prime Air drone delivery service across the United States. The company announced plans to reach nearly 500 towns by the end of this year, a sixfold increase in service area that could reach tens of millions of consumers.

First unveiled in December 2013, Prime Air faced regulatory and technical hurdles, leading to a limited rollout beginning in December 2022. Currently, Amazon operates 11 delivery stations across seven states, offering deliveries for items under 5 pounds (approximately 2.3 kilograms) and fitting within shoebox size. These items include groceries, electronics, beauty products, and medicine, with potential delivery times as fast as 30 minutes.

The mention of “nearly 500 towns” differs from the current “11 delivery stations” metric. Each station currently covers about 175 square miles. This expansion suggests a future increase in delivery stations, potentially up to around 70, to support the broadened service area.

This move by Amazon is expected to further stimulate the drone delivery market in the US. Competitors are also scaling up: Alphabet’s Wing plans to expand its service to 150 more Walmart stores and establish over 270 operational sites by 2027, potentially reaching 40 million consumers. Uber has also partnered with Zipline, aiming for one million drone deliveries daily by the end of 2029.
