Amazon’s satellite internet venture, Amazon Leo, has announced a significant milestone: over 1,000 satellites have now been manufactured. The company also revealed its impressive production capacity, capable of producing at least 3 to 4 satellites per day.

Scaling Up for Global Connectivity

This ambitious project, aimed at providing satellite-based internet services, is rapidly expanding its constellation. The production of over 1,000 satellites marks a substantial step towards realizing Amazon Leo’s vision for global internet coverage. Each satellite is a complex piece of engineering, comprising 4 million individual components and weighing over 1,000 pounds (approximately 453.6 kilograms).

State-of-the-Art Manufacturing Facility

To achieve this high production rate, Amazon Leo operates a sprawling satellite factory in Kirkland, Washington. This facility spans over 172,000 square feet (about 15,979 square meters) and is staffed by a dedicated team of over 500 technical employees. The company emphasizes its efficiency, noting that satellite qualification processes are completed in just a few days.

Deployment Progress and Future Plans

As of October 8th, Amazon Leo has successfully launched 396 satellites into orbit across 14 separate missions. While a small fraction, 4 satellites, did not reach their intended orbits, the overall deployment is progressing. The 1,000 completed satellites are sufficient to fulfill more than one-third of the requirements for the first-generation satellite constellation, underscoring the rapid advancement of the project.

The sheer volume of satellites produced and the speed of manufacturing highlight Amazon’s commitment to its Leo project. This initiative is poised to compete in the growing market of satellite internet, joining other major players in providing broadband access to underserved and remote areas worldwide.
