Almost all British students use AI in their studies

Apparently, almost all undergraduate students use artificial intelligence in one way or another. A new report by the UK’s Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) showed that 92 percent of students used generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, for studying. Moreover, 88 percent of them used it to pass exams. These figures are significantly higher than in the February 2024 HEPI report, in which 66% and 53% of participants reported using artificial intelligence, respectively.

The main reasons for using AI include saving time, improving the quality of work, and receiving instant support. Wealthier, STEM-oriented, and male respondents were more enthusiastic about AI in the survey. The main arguments of students against the use of AI were accusations of fraud, obtaining false results or hallucinations, and obtaining biased results. Women and younger students were more likely to express concerns. HEPI surveyed 1,041 UK and international students in the UK during December 2024.

Meanwhile, universities generally receive high marks from students regarding the integrity of their AI policies. Four-fifths of respondents said their institution has a clear AI policy, and importantly, 76% believe their university will notice the use of AI in assessed work (yes, despite the fact that 88% of them already have). Teachers are also better prepared to work with AI, with 42% of students saying their staff is “well prepared,” compared to 18% last year.
