The global market for AI-powered glasses is experiencing explosive growth, with shipments projected to reach 4.2 million units in the first half of 2026. This represents a remarkable year-over-year increase of 127%, according to a new report by Omdia.
Meta Dominates, China Emerges as a Hotbed
The surge in AI eyewear shipments is largely attributed to the continued momentum from Meta, which has captured a dominant 81.3% market share with 3.4 million units shipped. Following Meta, Even Realities secured the second spot with a 2.4% global market share, trailed closely by Alibaba at 2.1%.
Notably, the Chinese market has become a significant driver of this growth, with AI glasses shipments in China skyrocketing by 306% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year. This rapid expansion positions China as a crucial testing ground for a wide array of hardware configurations and innovative features within the AI eyewear sector.
Despite the overall market growth, the Chinese AI glasses market remains highly fragmented. The top three players—Alibaba, Shadowman, and Xiaomi—collectively hold only 46.1% of the market share, indicating substantial room for competition and diversification.
Addressing Privacy Concerns is Paramount
As the adoption of AI glasses, particularly those equipped with cameras, intensifies, Omdia’s Research Director, Jason Low, emphasized the critical need for companies to address mounting privacy concerns. Low stated:
As scrutiny over AI glasses equipped with cameras grows, relying solely on stricter privacy settings and clearer information disclosure is no longer sufficient. Companies must clearly define what content is captured by always-on cameras, inform users about the specific purposes for which this content will be used, and guarantee that this content will never be shared with third parties.
Low’s statement underscores a growing sentiment that transparency and robust data protection measures are essential for building consumer trust and ensuring the responsible development and deployment of AI eyewear technology. The industry faces the challenge of balancing innovative functionality with the imperative to safeguard user privacy, a balance that will likely shape the future trajectory of the AI glasses market.
The robust growth forecast suggests a strong consumer appetite for wearable AI technology. As companies navigate the complexities of privacy and market fragmentation, the next few years will be pivotal in determining the long-term success and widespread adoption of AI glasses.
