On November 8, 2026, the European sky was illuminated by an exceptionally bright light. A camera, positioned in the Italian Dolomites, inadvertently captured a stunning meteor-bolide streaking from east to west. Observed against a backdrop of rosy twilight and snow-capped mountain peaks, this event became one of the most widely documented meteor phenomena in history.

Encountering a Celestial Visitor

The photograph, taken under harsh sub-zero temperatures, showcases the snow-covered peaks of the La Villa ridge in the Alps. Above the village nestled in the valley, the constellation Ursa Major shimmers in the northern sky. However, the true star of the image is the intense fiery trail left by the meteor, which happened to enter the frame during the exposure. This brilliant flash, which carved across the sky near the familiar Big Dipper asterism, drew considerable observation across Europe.

Origin of the Fiery Spectacle

Widespread reports of observations of this powerful meteor across European skies attest to its significance. The American Meteor Society and the International Meteor Organization have logged it as one of the most reported meteor events in Earth’s history. Analysis of the meteor’s flight path over Germany suggests a connection to the active radiant of the November Taurids – a meteor shower associated with dust from Comet Encke.
