E-commerce giant JD.com and home appliance leader Midea Group have solidified their partnership with a strategic agreement aiming for a staggering 238.8 billion yuan (approximately $34 billion USD) in omni-channel sales over the next three years.

Deepening Collaboration Across Channels

The signing ceremony, held on November 5th, saw top executives from both companies in attendance, including JD.com CEO Xu Ran and Midea Chairman and CEO Fang Hongbo. This landmark deal expands their collaboration beyond online retail into a comprehensive strategic alliance covering omni-channel retail, digital procurement, enterprise services, and integrated global supply chains.

This initiative aims to leverage the complementary strengths of JD.com’s robust supply chain capabilities and Midea’s advanced manufacturing prowess to jointly explore and capture opportunities in both domestic and international consumer markets.

Expanding Offline Footprint

The partnership’s emphasis on an omni-channel strategy is further underscored by JD.com’s recent move in August to establish a dedicated offline business unit within its Home Appliances and Home Furnishings division. This strategic integration aims to consolidate offline channel resources and create a seamless online-to-offline customer experience.

Midea is actively supporting JD.com’s integrated online-offline strategy. By leveraging Midea’s extensive network of nearly 20,000 offline touchpoints, including JD MALLs, JD Electronics flagship stores, and specialized Midea stores across China, the collaboration now reaches consumers from major metropolitan areas to county-level towns and rural villages. A key development in this offline push is the joint establishment of approximately 400 “JD Midea Co-branded Stores,” enhancing brand visibility and customer engagement.

Record-Breaking Partnership

The significance of this renewed commitment is highlighted by past achievements. In 2023, Midea became the first partner in JD.com’s home appliance category to surpass 50 billion yuan in annual net sales. Building on this success, the new agreement sets an ambitious target of 210 billion yuan for 2024, and the newly announced 238.8 billion yuan for the subsequent three years.

Broader Business Integration

Beyond the retail sector, this strategic cooperation involves multiple key business units within JD.com. JD Logistics, JD Industrial, JD Enterprise, and JD International are all participating, indicating a holistic approach to leveraging each company’s strengths across a wider business spectrum. This cross-divisional involvement signals a deeper integration designed to unlock new avenues for growth and operational efficiency for both JD.com and Midea.
