The newly launched foldable smartphone from Apple, the iPhone Duo, is reportedly facing an uphill battle in its initial sales, with early reports indicating aggressive discounting in certain Chinese markets. Despite the device’s sophisticated design, some industry observers are questioning its competitive edge against established foldable offerings from Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi and Huawei.

Wang Teng, founder of Funxiu Technology, shared his initial impressions of the Apple iPhone Duo, noting that while the device is elegant, it doesn’t present significant advantages over its foldable competitors. He highlighted the growing prowess of contemporary Chinese tech companies, whose engineers and industrial resources are enabling them to produce products that often match or surpass Western counterparts, not only in smartphones but also in other tech sectors like smart sleep devices.

iPhone Duo: Pricing Concerns Emerge

User reports circulating on various online platforms suggest that the Apple iPhone Duo has encountered a scenario of being sold below its manufacturing cost in some regions of China. Specifically, on the Pinduoduo platform, the device is being offered at a discount of approximately 200-300 yuan compared to its official retail price.

iPhone Duo: Specifications and Market Positioning

Unveiled on October 23rd, the Apple iPhone Duo marks the company’s entry into the foldable smartphone arena. Its official pricing in China begins at 15,999 yuan. The device features a “clamshell” foldable design with an internal folding mechanism, boasting:

  • An external display measuring 5.4 inches.
  • A main internal foldable display of 7.6 inches.

Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by the A20 Pro chip, manufactured using TSMC’s 2-nanometer process technology. Apple claims that this chip offers a sustained performance improvement of 35% over the A19 Pro found in the iPhone 17 Pro.

The Competitive Foldable Smartphone Landscape

The foldable smartphone market is experiencing rapid expansion, and Apple’s arrival is notably delayed. Companies such as Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi have already introduced multiple generations of foldable devices, offering diverse form factors and innovative features. Despite its premium price point, the iPhone Duo appears to be contending with a market that has already matured, with consumers hesitant to embrace a new product lacking clear, compelling advantages.

Wang Teng’s observations underscore the increasing competitiveness of Chinese electronics manufacturers. They are not only catching up but actively setting new industry standards, signaling a potential shift in the global technology market’s power dynamics.

The initial market reception of the iPhone Duo could serve as a key indicator of how consumers perceive new offerings from established market leaders when competitors are already providing more refined and potentially more value-driven solutions. Future sales figures and subsequent user feedback will be crucial in determining Apple’s long-term prospects in the foldable device segment.
