At the recent 26th China International Industry Fair held in Shanghai, a prominent figure in the semiconductor industry issued a cautionary note regarding the burgeoning field of Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Yin Zhiyao, Chairman and General Manager of AMEC (Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment Inc. of China) and often referred to as the “Father of China’s Etching Machines,” spoke at the Integrated Circuit Summit Forum, sharing his insights on industry trends and the current AI fervor.

AI: A Potential Bubble on the Horizon?

Dr. Yin observed that AI is currently a dominant topic, with discussions about it permeating nearly every conference. However, he urged attendees to be mindful of a potential pitfall: AI could be experiencing a bubble, and everyone needs to pay close attention to this possibility.

Lessons from Semiconductor Cycles

To contextualize his warning, Dr. Yin pointed to the historical volatility of the global semiconductor industry’s Capital Expenditure (CAPEX). He presented a curve illustrating the annual increase and decrease in CAPEX from 1984 to 2026, highlighting its dramatic fluctuations. The industry has seen growth spurts of up to 100% in a single year, followed by declines of 30%, and even prolonged downturns. He stressed that the industry will likely continue to experience cyclical changes and emphasized the importance of developing strategies to navigate these fluctuations.

“Future we may still experience cyclical changes in the industry, what we need to think about is how to deal with this cyclical fluctuation.”

– Dr. Yin Zhiyao

Global Concerns Echoes

Dr. Yin’s concerns about an AI bubble are not isolated. In August, as US companies continued to pour massive speculative capital into expanding AI data centers, European regulators began contemplating the potential for an impending AI bubble burst. Major European banking institutions have indicated that market adjustments are highly probable, and such a shock would not spare any region or individual globally.

A Pioneer’s Journey

For context, Dr. Yin Zhiyao is a distinguished figure in the semiconductor equipment sector. He was the first Chinese student to join Intel and spent over two decades working in the United States, where he accumulated hundreds of patents and played a pivotal role in establishing two world-leading equipment companies. At the age of 60, he made the significant decision to return to China, foregoing a lucrative annual salary to pursue entrepreneurship. At that time, China’s semiconductor equipment market was virtually non-existent. He subsequently founded AMEC and led the company to become a formidable force in etching technology, comparable to the US companies he once worked for.

Navigating Future Uncertainty

Dr. Yin’s perspective, backed by his extensive experience and leadership in a historically cyclical industry, serves as a valuable reminder for stakeholders in the AI space. As investment and excitement surrounding AI continue to soar, his call for vigilance against potential market bubbles encourages a more measured and sustainable approach to growth in this transformative technology.
