The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Solar Orbiter spacecraft has successfully traced the origin of enigmatic “switchbacks” in the solar wind’s magnetic field. These S-shaped kinks, which represent sudden reversals in the magnetic field’s direction, have long puzzled scientists. By analyzing the elusive particles within these switchbacks, Solar Orbiter has now linked them directly to the Sun’s surface, providing crucial insights into the complex and often volatile nature of solar magnetism.

The Sun’s powerful magnetic field drives the solar wind, a constant outward flow of hot, charged particles. As this plasma streams into space, the magnetic field lines can become twisted, broken, or folded back. These complex interactions are the source of phenomena like switchbacks.

The Solar Orbiter mission is dedicated to studying the Sun and its influence on the solar system. Its advanced instruments allow it to observe the Sun up close, capturing data that helps scientists unravel the mysteries of solar activity, including the magnetic phenomena that can lead to dangerous solar storms.
