As the National Day holiday period nears its end, travelers heading home are advised to brace for potential charging congestion at 79 highway service areas across China on October 6th. The Ministry of Transport has identified these locations, primarily concentrated in provinces like Hunan, Hebei, and Guangdong, as likely to experience particularly busy charging conditions for electric vehicles.

To help navigate these busy times, drivers can utilize the “e路畅通” WeChat mini-program to check the real-time operational status of charging stations at various service areas. This proactive approach can help in planning routes and minimizing potential delays.

Peak Return Travel Expected

The Ministry of Transport’s analysis indicates a significant increase in electric vehicle usage during the holiday, with daily figures expected to be 1.8 times higher than usual. A key trend observed is that while charging demand is dispersed during the outward journey, it becomes highly concentrated during the return phase.

Charging activity at highway service areas typically begins to surge around 10 AM daily and gradually subsides after 9 PM. With October 5th and 6th pinpointed as the core return travel days, a substantial increase in the number of electric vehicles seeking charging facilities is anticipated.

The peak charging periods are forecasted as follows:

  • October 5th: 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
  • October 6th: 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Key Congested Service Areas

The majority of these high-demand service areas are situated along major expressways. Hunan province alone accounts for a significant portion, with 17 service areas identified, including Hengshi Service Area (Yiyang-Loudi and Loudi-Yiyang directions) and Chaling Service Area (Wuhan-Shenzhen direction).

Hebei province also features prominently, with 8 service areas expected to be busy, such as Leting Service Area (Qinhuangdao-Tianjin and Tianjin-Qinhuangdao directions) and Tanghai Service Area (Shenyang-Tianjin and Tianjin-Shenyang directions).

In Guangdong, 7 service areas are on the list, including Chenggong Parking Area (Wuhan-Shenzhen direction) and Huoshan Parking Area (Ganzhou-Shaoguan direction).

Other provinces with anticipated charging congestion include:

  • Liaoning: 6 service areas
  • Anhui: 5 service areas
  • Heilongjiang: 5 service areas
  • Jiangxi: 5 service areas
  • Henan: 3 service areas
  • Sichuan: 4 service areas
  • Shanxi: 3 service areas
  • Qinghai: 3 service areas
  • Guangxi: 2 service areas
  • Shaanxi: 2 service areas
  • Gansu: 2 service areas
  • Ningxia: 2 service areas
  • Jilin: 1 service area
  • Hubei: 1 service area

Recommendations for EV Drivers

Electric vehicle owners planning their return journey are strongly encouraged to:

  • Plan ahead: Check the status of charging stations in advance using the “e路畅通” mini-program.
  • Charge strategically: Consider charging during off-peak hours if possible, or at earlier service areas before reaching the most congested points.
  • Be patient: Delays are possible, so factor in extra time for charging stops.
  • Ensure sufficient range: Ensure your vehicle has adequate range to reach your destination or the next available charging station.

By staying informed and planning accordingly, drivers can make their return journey as smooth as possible, despite the anticipated surge in demand for EV charging facilities.
