Get ready, Star Wars fans! Lucasfilm has announced a major celebration for the 50th anniversary of the original saga. To mark this milestone, the very first Star Wars film, released in 1977, will be re-released in the stunning IMAX 70mm film format on February 19, 2027.

A Double Dose of Galactic Adventure

But that’s not all! Following the re-release of the classic, a brand-new Star Wars adventure, titled Star Wars: The Acolyte, is set to grace IMAX screens on May 28, 2027. This date is particularly significant as it falls on the weekend of the original film’s 50th premiere anniversary.

Lucasfilm confirmed that the IMAX 70mm film prints for the original movie will be created from a newly restored version of the film, promising a pristine visual and audio experience for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Introducing ‘The Acolyte’

Star Wars: The Acolyte is described as a fresh, standalone adventure. The film is helmed by the acclaimed director and producer duo behind Deadpool & Wolverine and Stranger Things, Shawn Levy. Stepping into the lead role of Kade Oberon is Ryan Gosling, known for his performances in Drive, Blade Runner 2049, La La Land, The Gray Man, and Barbie.

The story will follow a jaded drifter whose mysterious past catches up with him, pulling him into a perilous, galaxy-spanning adventure that ultimately forces him to confront his destiny.

Shot for IMAX

Significantly, Star Wars: The Acolyte has been filmed specifically for IMAX presentation. The production utilized IMAX-certified film cameras, and the movie will be presented as an IMAX 70mm film print in select IMAX film theaters. This commitment to the format suggests a visually immersive experience designed to take full advantage of IMAX’s unique capabilities.

The dual announcement signals a significant year for the Star Wars franchise, blending a nostalgic look back at its origins with a bold step forward into new storytelling territory, all presented on the grandest cinematic canvas.
